Welcome to The Great English Way! A 400 mile cultural, historical and spiritual pilgrimage walk from the naval maritime town of Falmouth where Henry VIII built a castle to keep the invaders out, Charles Darwin arrived on the Beagle, and Nelson’s Messenger, Lt John Lapenotiere arrived on the Pickle, to deliver the news of the victory at the battle of Trafalgar but that Lord Nelson was dead, to the spiritual heart of England – Canterbury Cathedral to the crypt where Archbishop Thomas Becket was martyred on the orders of Henry II.
This curated walk leads the pilgrim through a thousand years of English history and changing landscapes – from Viking times, through to the industrial revolution and beyond. So come on what are you waiting for? Get inspired! Pack a rucksack and head on to the path… What will you discover?
We will be posting regular dispatches from the way where we will bring you all the news, culture, arts and media from the towns and cities on the path.
We will bring you inspirational stories, landscape photography, history, new music from local artists, and talk to the people who live in the 22 stages from Falmouth to Canterbury, to hear their voices of England, and what it means to be English today.
A regular podcast is also being set up so watch this space!
As the first pilgrimage is yet to be walked by our founder Alan, on 1st May 2026. You will notice that the site is fairly empty apart from the basics, but be assured that it will soon start to breathe with your stories…
